about

Ocean is also a song that was written due to my interest in our surrounds on this planet. I love the Ocean and the lyrics are all about this. I have spent many hours staring out to sea waiting for a wave to catch whilst surfing and to be quite honest, sitting there on my board looking around is probably just as rewarding as catching waves. Catching waves is almost just an activity that one does in the middle of the Ocean experience to me. It is utterly fascinating attempting to read the surf, waiting for waves to come, trying to predict where they will form and when, it is such a timing thing and it really gets you onto the groove of the ocean on that particular day, which highlights another feature of the Ocean mentioned in the song - how changeable it is. It is never the same, each experience uniquely affording a type of learning that is hard to articulate. And it isn't just surfing, it can be body surfing, boogie boarding, absolutely anything. The smell of the ocean can be intoxicating and the serene feeling which often accompanies one after leaving the beach is wonderful. The opening lyric is all about sitting out in the surf - "I love it out here". The music element was actually stumbled upon in 1997 whilst practising Marimba at the University of NSW as a part of an incompleted music degree. I was meant to be practising something which was not interesting me and played those chords which are played on Vibraphone on the recording (though the key was originally in G, changed to suit the singing, G is actually better for the tuned percussion in the song if you ask me).

lyrics

"OCEAN"
I love it out here
When you call my name I run
You’re simply amazing
From the dawn to the setting sun

You sound so sweet
With a scent of lands far away
So much authority
Respect for you night and day

You have many guises
You wear the weather of the day
From dark and mysterious
To clear and bright on a sunshiny day

The pleasure is all mine
When you grace me with your touch
A sensual experience
I do indeed love you very much

You’re part of my soul yes
With a touch my core is calm
You soothe you heal and caress
Nature’s own alms

How do you do this to me?
I really don’t know
You like to show me the way
And Oh what a show!
