Lay Down and Feel the Earth Rotate On Its Axis is one of my favourite songs that I have written. The musical part - the riffs came to me again over time sometimes working on it (in my head) whilst driving to work. To me, the main guitar/organ part is quite an esoteric sounding run, definitely something ethereal about it, which really is the whole song, a run which evokes ideas for me such as of a Greek mythological adventurer on journey, performing amazing feats, skimming over oceans on a cloud etc. The lyrics however have nothing to do with this. The lyrics originate from a time in my life where doing very little seemed to be the best course. I was about to embark on living by myself (literally) and maybe it was a way of preparing myself. It got to be so, that after doing very little during a day I seemed to be quite aware of the pace of the day rolling past - the link to the Earth rotating on its axis. It seems like a sensible idea to find one's own space and time without action to think through one's issues, journey, life, problems or all of the former in order to sort things out. From my experience it can be very useful to try and sort things out in my head before acting. The drumming introduction is inspired by a drum feel/part performed by AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd on one of the songs from the 'Back in Black' album. It isn't the same in terms of tempo and feel but it is similar in terms of the pattern used.
lyrics
"LAY DOWN AND FEEL THE EARTH ROTATE ON ITS AXIS"
Lay back,
and feel the Earth rotate on its axis
Lay down,
and feel what it's all about
If you want to lay down your blues
Lay down and feel the Earth's muse
Lay down,
and feel the Earth rotate on its axis
Trouble got you in its grip
Time to take a healing trip
Tangled rubber band mind
Lay back and let it all unwind
Out of tune with your deal
Lay down and feel the feel
Lay down,
and feel the Earth rotate on its axis
Feel the day go by
Sky and clouds way up high
Feel the balance return
Tune right in and you will learn
Feeling troubled by the high pressure bus
There's a rhythm that's bigger than us
Lay down,
and feel the earth rotate on its axis
