Colours is a song written in the Blue Mountains in 2002. The opening lyric came from eating oranges grown in our garden - a very vibrant experience. I love colour so I wrote about some associations with various colours. The smell of turquoise came from wandering through a street in Cremorne at night after eating dinner at a friend's house and experiencing an incredible intoxicating mix of flowers that were giving out a gorgeous scent walking past various houses endowed with lovely gardens. It may have been Spring, maybe Autumn, perhaps the moon was drawing out the full power of the flowers that night - the exotic colour of turquoise seemed to encapsulate the magic and mystery that the scent invoked. The musical part came to me whilst driving to a weekly tennis comp, held at night. I got to the tennis and scrawled down the riff as best as I could on paper and there you have it. I was able to remember the feel of the song because it was the same as "The Stake" by Steve Miller, whose music I have a lot of time for.
lyrics
"COLOURS"
The taste of orange, so clear and so bright
A smell of turquoise piercing the night
Pink engenders a loving care
Red embraces a fiery stare
Yellow sounds, like cicadas call
Streaming sunlight encompassing all
The feel of green, needed most
Purple mist, floating ghost
The blue of gum trees
Of Oceans so deep
Of skys above us
Of cool restful sleep
The taste of orange, so clear and so bright
A smell of turquoise piercing the night
White as Freedom, black as storm
These colours surround us, night and morn
