about

Autumn Lady came into existence from a riff that had come into my head and combining this with my desire to complete the seasonal theme by writing a song about Autumn (even though Spanish Mackeral from the first album is set in and partly about Autumn). It was becoming slightly corny to me to write purely about a season and my observations of my surroundings during those seasons having done it three times before, so I put a twist on it and linked the Autumn idea to a mythological Autumn Lady, in a way personifying Autumn. People cannot help but be linked to the seasons and this song is about this to some degree. The season affects our behaviour, our attitudes and our clothing, the latter particularly interesting me because Autumn brings out clothes with a bit more style and character than the usual summer offerings which are obviously geared to keep us as cool as possible, especially on the NSW coast. Autumn brings out extra layers in clothing and in turn extra layers in the looks and characters of people, character especially being inflenced by a change in temperature. In Autumn people have greater opportunity to express themselves through the clothing they wear, due to the extra dimensions of jackets, coats, leggings, boots, scarves etc. It was important to me to try to incorporate the stereotypical autumn leaf colours (though mainly associated with Northern hemisphere deciduous trees). In terms of the musical aspect I like this one structurally in terms of the opportunities for John to improvise three times in it, in effect, three solos, rather than the standard lone section for soloing. The bridge came about from noodling on the electric piano, with encouragement from Cliff to come up with some interesting chords. I guess one could liken the bridge and its change in feel in relation to the rest of the song, to the drastic changes in weather that occur during Autumn as the sun heads North in relation to the Earth (in the Southern hemisphere).

lyrics

"AUTUMN LADY"
The day is still
and blue is the sky
the sun is shining
lighting your eyes

The air is crisp
from evening ‘til dawn
perfect weather
for snuggling ‘til morn

You say you love me
and I love that
I love you too girl
matter of fact

The day is beautiful
much like yourself
you are my one and only
Autumn Lady

Great to see you
dressed for the season
in all your finery
you break down my reason

Browns and reds,
orange and yellows
stoke my fire
I’ll work the bellows

You say you love me
and I love that
I love you too girl
matter of fact

I fell for you
like the leaves off the trees

you make me weak in the knees!

Colours turning
change in the air
fading light
from past summer’s stare

You’ve shed last season
and all its ideals
embracing new light
a new set of feels

You say you love me
and I love that
I love you too girl
matter of fact

The day is beautiful
much like yourself
you are my one and only
Autumn Lady
